Walnut Park Montessori School promises to provide an environment that nurtures
the child's natural love for learning. The school is sponsored by the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Boston (CSJ's) who seek to promote love of God and love of the "dear neighbor" in a spirit of unity and reconciliation. As a sponsored ministry, Walnut Park Montessori School seeks to provide a place where children between the ages of
2.9 through age 6 are nurtured spiritually, cognitively, socially, academically, emotionally and physically. Our Mission is to create an environment that fosters and serves each child individually while promoting a sense of community within a classroom setting.
We are committed to excellence in education by fostering an atmosphere of
independence, discovery, exploration, critical thinking and peace making. At Walnut Park Montessori School we value diversity among our children, both in their interests and personalities and in their ethnic, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds.
This diversity contributes to a greatly enriched environment for all children.
In the Fall of 2002, Walnut Park Montessori School received accreditation from the American Montessori Society (AMS). This accreditation is the highest recognition from AMS and indicates that Walnut Park Montessori School has met all requirements and criteria of an "Authentic Montessori School."
Walnut Park Montessori School is a feeder school for Jackson Elementary School, located on the same property. Children attending Walnut Park Montessori are granted
a seat in the Jackson first grade, providing they meet the age requirement and pass the screening test. Together we form the Jackson-Walnut Park Educational Collaborative (JWPEC).
In addition, Walnut Park Montessori is the host site for Montessori Teacher Training through NEMTEC, New England Montessori Teacher Education Center and is also
associated with the Catholic School Office of the Archdiocese of Boston. You can browse these websites for additional information.

Young children have an innate desire to learn. The Montessori environment provides the child with a structure that allows for freedom within limits and offers developmentally appropriate activities to aid the child in his/her cognitive development. Movement and active involvement with the learning environment, rather than dependence on adults for constant external direction, fosters patterns of concentration and perseverance in the child. The focus is on the process of learning, rather than on the simple accumulation
of facts. Skills are presented which teach children how to learn and which encourage them to be self-motivated, competent learners. Our teachers provide the opportunity
for children to function in a safe and positive climate. The result is a child who becomes a lifelong, passionate learner who embodies a sincere love of learning. Walnut Park Montessori School is accredited by the American Montessori Society (AMS).

Acknowledging a profound need for unity and reconciliation in the broken places in people's lives and in society, the Sisters seek to help people recognize God's active and inclusive love for all individuals. Since their arrival at St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, Jamaica Plain in 1873 they have attempted to meet the needs of God's people by standing with the poor, by striving to eliminate ignorance, suffering, and oppression, and by embodying a spirit of peace in their own actions and demeanor. Their many talents are offered within a framework of deep spirituality which is enhanced and nurtured by the commitment to each other and to the spirit of the gospel message of Jesus Christ. The Sisters "Share ministry with other women and men, seeking through this collaboration to bring greater fruition to the diversity of gifts which the Spirit imparts."

The school is located in a beautiful natural setting behind the Jackson Homestead. This charming 19th century carriage house, once part of the Flanagan Estate, accommodates 5 multi-age Montessori classrooms. In addition to the classrooms, the facility offers a gymnasium, a state-of-the-art playground, a school library, and a spacious after school program, which services children from both Walnut Park and Jackson Schools.
